Thunder Bay
Thunder Bay is getting bigger, but at a much slower rate than the rest of Ontario and the country, according to 2006 census results released Tuesday.
The city’s population grew by 0.8 per cent in five years, to 122, 907. That represents an increase of slightly less than 1,000 people. The provincial average was a 6.6 per cent increase. Nationally the figure was a 5.4 per cent growth.
For the purpose of the census, Thunder Bay's census metropolitan area is defined as stretching from the U.S. border in the south to Dorion in the north. It is the 31st largest city in Canada, the 14th largest in Ontario.
Almost 80 per cent of the district's population lives in the Thunder Bay Census Metropolitan Area; no other community in the district exceeds 7,000 in population.
